Hoppy Days are Here Again: The Growth of Craft Beer and Brewpubs in the US
The beer industry in the United States, once ruled by the big brew houses, has transformed into a David and Goliath scenario, with microbreweries across the country giving the “big guys” a run for their money.
Craft beer is booming in the United States. The production volume of craft beer in 2014 was up 18 percent, according to a report from the Brewers Association, an organization of craft brewers. The report also notes that the number of craft breweries has increased by almost 700 since mid-2014. Another report suggests that the beer industry has more than twice the impact of the wine industry on the economy and just slightly higher than the impact of the video game industry in the United States.
Americans are excited about craft beer and an entire subculture has popped up around the industry. Consumers are quick to share their thoughts on the latest brews and are more willing than ever to give something new a try.
But what about the world beyond the six-pack? What does the Away-From-Home craft beer market look like?
Americans looking for a new craft beer experience may find just what they’re looking for in a brewpub. Traditionally a brewpub is a pub or restaurant that brews beer on the premises. These can range from small establishments that only serve beer or sometimes small snacks to larger modern restaurants.
