Gluten Free Options Are The Next Big Trend On Restaurant Menus
Recent research from the Mayo Clinic has shown that approximately 1.8 million Americans have celiac disease, and of those, 1.4 million are unaware of their diagnosis. An additional 1.6 million Americans follow a gluten-free diet despite not being diagnosed with the condition. As the number of people following gluten-free diets increases, so will demand for gluten-free dining options at restaurants.
Gluten-free dining has become one of the hottest trends in foodservice. Major restaurant chains such as Applebee’s, Buffalo Wild Wings, Red Robin, and Fazoli’s offer gluten-free menu options. Regional and local restaurants are following suit to cash in on the gluten-free craze. In its 2014 Restaurant Industry Forecast Executive Summary, the National Restaurant Association listed gluten-free cuisine in its top five menu trends for 2014 in both tableservice and limited-service. (It ranked as the #1 trend in the limited-service category.)
There are even foodservice industry conferences that are specific to gluten and other food allergies. On April 12th and 13th, the Gluten and Allergen Free Expo is happening in Chicago, Illinois. Whether you are looking for specialty products that taste great or trying to learn how to cook and bake to meet your dietary needs, the Expo is the place to be.
